Born in Barcelona, Antoni Tàpies (1923–2012) developed a deeply personal visual language across painting and printmaking — a lexicon of symbols, scratches, and inscriptions rooted in material and gesture. His work reflects both his Catalan identity and his dialogue with the Parisian intellectual milieu of the 1950s, particularly the artists of Art Informel such as Jean Fautrier and Jean Dubuffet.

Tàpies’s surfaces are never merely images but territories: dense matter built through impasto, gestural marks, inverted script, and humble materials — earth, marble dust, and pigment — transforming the ordinary into something meditative and metaphysical.
