About the Artist
Born in Florence, Italy, in 1936, Pedro Friedeberg moved to Mexico as a child and became one of the most distinctive figures associated with Mexican Surrealism.
Originally trained in architecture, Friedeberg developed a fascination with impossible spaces, elaborate patterns, mystical symbols, and visual illusions. Encouraged by artist Mathias Goeritz, he entered the creative circle of legendary surrealists Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo.
Best known for his iconic Hand Chair, Friedeberg spent more than six decades creating a fantastical universe where art, architecture, humour, and eccentricity coexist. His work is represented in major international museum collections, including LACMA and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
